Rancho del Rey Ground Water Well Project

ABOUT THE PROJECT

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PROJECT NAME:           Rancho del Rey Ground Water Well Project

LOCATION:                   Chula Vista, CA (Rancho del Rey/Terra Nova Intersection)

DESCRIPTION:

The Otay Water District has a ground water well development project in the Rancho del Rey community of Chula Vista. The project involves the development of ground water production and monitoring wells on District property and the construction of facilities to house the wells and associated water treatment equipment and supplies.

REASON:

Supply shortages and regulatory restrictions have limited Southern California’s imported water supplies. The Rancho del Rey Ground Water Well project is a potential new source of drinking water for Otay Water District customers that would replace a portion of the imported water our region depends on from Northern California and the Colorado River. By continuing to develop new water sources, the District is ensuring customers have access to reliable drinking water supplies for the future.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the purpose of the Rancho del Rey Well Project?

The ground water well project would provide Otay Water District customers with a new reliable source of drinking water. Regulatory restrictions and supply reductions have led to water shortages across California.

To combat a third consecutive year of drought, in February 2009, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger proclaimed a state of emergency and ordered immediate action to manage the state’s water crisis. In addition, regulatory restrictions due to environmental concerns in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Bay Delta have lead to reduced deliveries to the State Water Project, the source of 30 percent of Southern California’s water supply.

To make up for lost deliveries to the State Water Project, water agencies across Southern California have begun working vigorously to develop even more new, dependable supplies of local water.

Following the Governor’s proclamation, the Otay Water District directed its staff to investigate needed actions to reactivate a ground water well on district owned property in the Rancho Del Rey community. That well had been inactive since 1994.

The project involved drilling new ground water production and monitoring wells and the construction of facilities to house the wells and associated water treatment equipment and supplies.

What are the benefits of this project?

The Rancho del Rey Ground Water Well project is a potential new source of drinking water for Otay Water District customers.

Tests verify the well system could produce approximately 500 acre-feet of water per year or enough water to supply more than 1,000 homes.

How will my water service be affected?

Water service will not be affected.

What are the environmental impacts of the project?

The environmental impacts of the project were analyzed and documented in a Mitigated Negative Declaration (MND) prepared according to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) guidelines. The MND was adopted by the Otay Water District's Board of Directors at their March 3, 2010 Board Meeting.  The District is evaluating the Carlsbad and Rosarito Desalination projects before committing to construction.  We regret any inconvenience this may cause residents.
